Delegation is the art of assigning work or responsibilities to others, most of the times, your subordinates or employees. A crucial managerial skill, if inculcated, could help an individual in completion of major assignments or projects. Assigning or delegating tasks depend on various factors like the capability, experience, and/or reliablility of an individual. An air of caution is also necessary, if the end result would reflect on your job or reputation. Most of us like to believe, we are capable of doing all are tasks, minor or major, but we do not have enough time. What we miss out is that if we learn the art of delegating, we could conserve ample amount of energy to focus on major issues in our lives and still have enough time for ourselves.
To begin with:
· Make a list of your daily tasks. Prioritise them. The less important or the ones, which do not require your personal attention, could be delegated to your subordinates, under supervision. You could then focus all your attention on the crucial tasks.
· Assign tasks to individuals equivalent or a little higher than their capabilities. If necessary, provide appropriate training before handing over the tasks. Training instills a sense of confidence within an individual.
· In delegating, avoid grudging or pestering the subordinates for perfection. Most of them would just stay away the next time you put forth further tasks.
Your benefits:
· Delegating tends to loosen your control on every task you handle. It saves a considerable amount of time and energy. Also, it relieves you of a lot of stress.
· It helps you to focus on tougher tasks, and contributes towards achieving personal goals.
· It creates a feel-good-factor amongst the subordinates and motivates them to work more energetically.
